Chelsea (Kerbaugh) Nguyen | Central Cass Class of 2010
K-5 Elementary Music Teacher, Chicago, IL

Chelsea (Kerbaugh) Nguyen, Central Cass 2010 alum, is currently a K-5 elementary music teacher outside of Chicago, IL. According to Nguyen, “Teaching music is what I do daily! It is a joy to see my students grow as musicians even at a young age. Seeing my students understand music better through performing, creating, and connecting is why I teach.” Outside of work Chelsea enjoys singing in a community gospel choir.

Reflecting to her high school years at Central Cass, attending band and choir daily was very special to Chelsea. She recalls, “Those ensembles were not just classes, but a place where I felt I belonged.” Achieving high ratings at state music contest was a highlight for Nguyen—also, being a member of the Northwest Honor and UND honor bands were memorable experiences. “I am grateful for Mr. Darcy Brandenburg’s teaching, guidance, and mentorship. I am thankful for the many students, including myself, that he inspired.”

Nguyen believes you don’t have to be a music major to be in music ensembles! She recommends students continue to be involved in music after graduation. “Music can take you places you never thought possible!”

After high school, Chelsea attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD and earned a Bachelor's degree in Instrumental & Vocal Music Education and a Master's degree in Music Education.

In 2015, Nguyen was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Scholarship to Vietnam, where she lived for 5.5 years. She was a National Anthem vocalist for President Barack Obama during his tour of SE Asia.

“While living overseas, I traveled to over twenty countries. It was always a dream of mine to teach and live abroad.” Chelsea is an example of a Central Cass graduate who was and is “living the dream!”
